Creating my Table of Contents
Creating my Table of Contents
Just as when I planned for my final cover and feature spread, I drew a sketch of how I wanted my table of contents to look like.
Since I had to come up with content that would suit the theme of a natural lifestyle I wrote some ideas at the beginning of my magazine process in my phone's "Notes" application. These were a few ideas I came up with and I will organize and apply them to my magazine.
I first inserted all my images and my text so I could go getting an idea of how I would enhance the look of the table of contents with all my ideas on it. I later researched on these ideas and put them on my sketch above.
Since I had to come up with content that would suit the theme of a natural lifestyle I wrote some ideas at the beginning of my magazine process in my phone's "Notes" application. These were a few ideas I came up with and I will organize and apply them to my magazine.
I also focused on this specific issue of Mother Earth to assist me in the organization and know how to elaborate my own ideas in a similar format.
I then found a flaw in the picture I took of the teeth model. I t had a missing tooth, but I decided to search up how to fix it with Photoshop. What I did was use the selection tool to select the a bottom tooth and then use ctrl+alt to replicate it and place it where the missing tooth was. Here is a link to the video I used to learn this process and pictures of how I did this.

After placing down all of my ideas and touching up the picture, I chose all my fonts for these pages. For the title, "Contents", I utilized Rockwell font because it is more suitable for larger texts and its clear as it stands out. For the section of the articles(Nature's Food, Flora and Fauna etc.) and article titles Gill Sans MT was incorporated because it is very legible but I also made the sections titles bold to make it stand out from the title of the article titles.
After choosing my fonts, I had to play with the colors to see which swatches would compliment the pictures, as well as the content. For most of the text I chose blue to match the dentistry topic pervading the issue. The section titles were pink because they matched the pink in the first picture with the teeth model because of the color of the gums. The pictures also match at least one article beneath it.
Mother Earth Living magazine had about 60-75 pages in each of their issues so I followed that same amount of page numbers to keep the magazine on the shorter side and not overwhelm readers. This was displayed on the subheading on the four images at the top of both pages. I chose a white font because it was the one that mostly stood out in every picture and if I would have chosen a different color for every image page number, it can disturb the simplistic outlook of it.
Another feature I decided to add was the "Returning Topic" section. It is similar to Mother Earth Living's "In Every Issue" segment in their table of contents, as I previously mentioned in my prior blog posts. I was compelled to imitate this ides because it calls to returning readers and give them a sense of familiarity with the magazine. I chose the pale yellow for the text box so it wasn't too prominent on the page, yet it can still be acknowledged by returning buyers. The page numbers are pink to contrast the pale yellow and match the other pink text.
To finish up these pages, I moved the "Contents" title to the top of the page to make it more clearly seen and to also have a slightly different formatting than that of Mother Earth Living.
This are the final pages.
